Review of EXTOL Chronicles - Counting 837 Claims

In October’s “Ask the Integrator”, Barry is asked how to count number HIPAA inbound 837 (Institutional/Professional/Dental) claims in any given day. Since there can be multiple claim (CLM - Loop 2300) segments per ST/SE, there is no easy way to determine, in EXTOL EDI Integrator (EEI).

Barry offers the solution of creating an additional database table and adding it to the Inbound 837 fileset. I like this idea because we can capture pertinent 837 information such as claim number, trading partner, date, time and etc.

ANOTHER WAY TO COUNT CLAIMS:

Users can implement the EXTOL External Call INCDTAARA (Increment Data Area). With INCDTAARA users can increment a specific data area for every CLM segment that is received. In the program we can substitute the portion that retrieves the qualifier information (P4CDQD) and use today’s date to determine the DTAARA.

Note: Users will want to create the DTAARA with the IBM job scheduler so it exists before the external call is executed.
