Lessons Learned: Upgrading EXTOL Business Integrator from 2.2.1 to 2.5

7th June 2012

Over the weekend I upgraded EXTOL Business Integrator (EBI) version 2.2.1 to version 2.5. It was quite a lengthy process that had many issues.

I first started off by installing EBI 2.5 in its own unique directory. In our case it was the D:\ drive. Once EBI 2.5 was installed, we were instructed to run Upgrade.exe.

With Upgrade.exe we were asked where the current install of EBI 2.2.1 was located. In our case, it was also the D:\ drive. From here the upgrade was rocky.

ISSUE #1:

We first started to see errors pop up when the EBI upgrade process tried to delete the dbx.lck, and dbx. files.

ERROR – Unable to remove file (D:\EBI25\database\xdb1\db.lck) for unknown reason

ERROR – Unable to remove file (D:\EBI25\database\log\log.ctrl) for unknown reason

To resolve this issue, I <right clicked> on the recycling bin. From there I selected “Properties”. From there, I de-selected “Display delete confirmation dialog”.

This resolved a majority of the errors, however I started to encounter additional errors.

ISSUE #2:

ERROR – Source file/directory (C:\EBI21\ebi\sm) cannot be read.

To resolve this issue, I granted the user profile I was using full control over both directories – D:\EBI221 and D:\EBI25 – recursively.

LESSON LEARNED:

Next time I perform an upgrade I plan to do a ‘dry-run’ where I copy the source directory and find an available partition/machine to run the upgrade over. This will give me the reassurances I need to perform the upgrade.

As-is, the upgrade process is temperamental at best. To recover from an error we had to close the window and start from scratch. There was no warning/notice to give additional details/instructions. I closed the window and started all over again. I did this approximately 12+ times.
